Estimate only, not legal or tax advice. This calculator shows gross pay before taxes and deductions. It does not calculate tax withholding. Overtime and paid-leave rules vary by state and by employee type, so check the US Department of Labor and your state labor office before running payroll.

FAQ

How the calculator works

How is overtime calculated?

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. The calculator applies this per workweek, using the workweek start day you choose. Switch on daily overtime for states that require it.

Do PTO and holiday hours count toward overtime?

Under the FLSA, paid hours that aren't worked (PTO, holidays, sick leave) aren't hours worked, so they don't count toward the 40-hour threshold. The calculator pays them at the regular rate and leaves them out of overtime. Some employers and states treat them differently.

How do I log a lunch clock-out or split shift?

Tap + Shift on a day to add a second clock-in and clock-out, for example 9:00–12:00 and 12:30–5:30. The gap isn't counted. Use the Break field only for unpaid time that wasn't clocked.

Which states have daily overtime?

A few states, most notably California, require overtime after a set number of hours in a day, and sometimes double time. When daily overtime is on, those hours are counted first, and only the remaining regular hours count toward the weekly limit. Rules have exceptions, so confirm with your state labor office.

Are breaks paid?

Under federal guidance, short rest breaks (usually 5–20 minutes) are generally paid. Meal periods of 30 minutes or more, where the employee is fully relieved of duty, can be unpaid. Enter only unpaid minutes in the Break field.

What if a shift ends after midnight?

Enter the clock-out time as normal. If it's earlier than the clock-in time, the calculator treats it as the next day and counts the hours on the day the shift started.

What does punch rounding do?

It rounds each clock-in and clock-out to the nearest, next or previous 5, 6 or 15 minutes. Rounding is only acceptable when it's neutral over time and doesn't consistently favour the employer.

What are templates?

Save a regular week (days, shifts, breaks and days off) as a named template, then apply it to any future period with one tap. Templates are saved in this browser.
